Better Quality, Better Investment.

American Apparel Grey Tri-Blend Shirt

The T-shirt has come a long way in the past couple of years. Although white 100% cotton basic cotton shirt such as the Gildan 5000 are still the top selling shirts in the business, the once non-existent designer t-shirts sector  is eating away at it’s competition. Ring-spun cotton and poly-blends from American Apparel, Tultex, Article1, Alternative Apparel, etc. have opened America’s eyes to a whole new kind of fashionable wear.

Of course, the obvious choice to buy the basic cotton shirt is the price, and if you have NOT experienced the cut, feel, and overall quality of a “designer” or ring spun shirt, then it’s hard to understand the value.

We’ve all received that free shirt at an event or for work. What’s your memory of that shirt, better yet, that event or company that supplied the shirt? Just like any service or product your company produces, the promotional t-shirt is an extension of your businesses identity and a representation of the quality your product or in which you perform that service.

When I began Alternative Motive back in 2006, custom t-shirt design and printing was not even a goal of mine. I did not like that side of the business, and felt that it was an epidemic that was filling our drawers and eventually our landfills with crappy shirts. Maybe I was trying too hard to make a social statement, and by doing nothing at all to rectify the situation, my efforts were short-lived. Now, with more access to higher quality blank apparel, my goal is educate my customers and consumers alike as to why it is better to use higher quality products to promote, inform, and celebrate by Letting The Cotton Speak.

This is where the hard part begins. How to persuade a potential client to go with a better quality, more expensive shirt, when they can just go elsewhere and get that cheap shirt printed. For instance, I literally just received this inquiry from my website 2 minutes ago (absolute perfect timing):

Hi! You were recommended! So, I thought I’d email you to get some pricing. I belong to a pit bull group and we do events throughout the year. We are looking to get shirts printed to sell at our events to raise funds. So, we are looking for very reasonable pricing. Could you please send me some prices. We can do different styles, colors… don’t know if there is price difference for graphics or words only, etc. I have a few graphics in mind but we are just wanting to promote discrimination against bully breeds, etc. Thanks for your time!

What do I do here? From my first judgment, I know that this is an uneducated consumer in the world of t-shirts (and I’m not belittling anyone). They have probably printed shirts in the past for an event or similar promotion. More than likely, they chose the least expensive option. My goal, is to understand exactly what they are using these shirts for and how. Then, explaining my view on using better quality shirts. Then, I’ll tie it back to my potential customer, and how choosing a better shirt will in turn get more wear from their customers, thereby increasing their message life and marketing dollars.

Chances are, she may still want to go with the absolute cheapest. Which I will then give her those options as well. Hey, I don’t want to let an opportunity pass me by, right? Customers tend to change there habits over time, and if I can make someone happy with a great looking custom designed shirt that promotes a positive message, I’m in. At least I’ll have tried my best.

What color would you like?

So, whether it’s a custom job or a new shirt for your wardrobe, ring-spun or blended designer style shirts, will provide you with a soft, better fitting, and more fashionable shirt that will last longer and just out right make you smile when you put it on. Not to mention, most of the time you supporting more sustainable production and shopping habits, in addition to using American Made products. Just ask someone who owns one! I’ve gotta give props

One of the coolest t-shirts ever.

I came across this shirt online the other day and I almost bought it. They were out of all the women’s sizes, but were fully stocked in the mens/unisex sizes. Unfortunately, the shipping on the shirt was $9!

Typically, I’m not a red shirt guy (unless playing soccer), but this shirt is different. It has a very Asian feel to it, obviously stemming from the color combination and Geisha’s (at least that’s what it looks like to me).

What do you think? Is it worth $28? I believe it’s probably printed on a decent shirt (probably American Apparel or similar).

Olympics, US Soccer Jersey’s, & a New T-shirt Design!

The Olympics in Vancouver are right around the corner (Feb. 12th), with The World Cup in S. Africa soon to follow! So, what the hell are you going to wear? Hopefully not the shirt below!

Ugly United States Shirt

Don't be caught watching the Olympics and World Cup in a shirt like this!

The US Men’s Soccer jersey’s by Nike were released a couple weeks ago, and the verdict is so/so.  The jersey’s seen here, are starting to grow on me. I really like the retro look. They are simple, classy, and not flashy. BUT, they are extremely expensive! Not sure yet, but they will probably retail for $60-$80. Yikes! Plus, I’ve never been a Jersey wearing guy.

So, if you’re not looking to spend a fortune and you want a cool shirt that supports USA and is cool enough to wear out to a bar, look no further. Alternative Motive T-shirts and Apparel has designed a shirt that is printed on an American Apparel (made in the USA) Athletic Grey Tri-Blend shirt.  Super soft, lightweight, and vintage style.  The price, $21. The design was based on one of the best chants ever! USA, USA, USA, USA!!!  The shirts will be available very soon! Stay tuned for more info! http://www.alternativemotive.com

I’m just waiting for them to have a category entitled, “Best Online T-shirt Company That Starts with An “A” and ends with an “E”!”, but I digress. As silly as it may be, please vote for a couple of my friends:

Give to Haiti Week 2.1.2010 – 2.7.2010

Hearing about the situation in Haiti will not go away for years, neither will the need for support.  Over the past week, I’ve found myself wanting to do more. Give more. Unfortunately, I feel limited to giving money as my way of helping.

While trying to figure out how to give more money, and where I could come up with the cash, it dawned on me that I have “cash” assets here in my office that I like to refer to as t-shirts.
Why not use my shirts as an avenue to donate 100% of profits to the Red Cross Haiti Relief fund?
So, for the week of 2.1.2010 through 2.7.2010, Alternative Motive will be doing just that.

In essence, the customer is the one donating, but now the shirt can also be a representation of hope and relief to the Haitians in dire need – letting the cotton speak once again.

Since my initial thought of this, other retail stores have generously offered to support the cause with us. Coincidentally enough, they are 10 of the top independent shops in Cincinnati, OH.  I am proud to be a part of the Cincinnati retail community, and this support will be a powerful omen as to how our community can shop locally AND give globally. 2.1.2010 through 2.7.2010

See list here.  All stores will gladly accept donations to The Red Cross or you can click here. If you haven’t donated yet, now is the time. Please pass this info along.

-If you’re still reading, thank you.

So, the Haiti relief funding is fully underway and The Red Cross seems to be making headway, right?

Over the past week, I’ve found myself wanting to do more. Give more. Unfortunately, I feel limited to giving money as my way of helping.  While trying to figure out how I could give more money, and where I could come up with the cash, I thought of the “cash” assets that I have here in my office that I like to refer to as t-shirts!

Why not use my shirts as an avenue to do even more than my normal 10% donation?  It’s a win win situation. Alternative Motive donates 100% of profits to the Red Cross Haiti Relief fund, while I recoup my costs to make new shirts! In essence, the customer is the one donating, but my shirt is a symbol not only of the stimulating of our economy and the style of the one wearing it, but more importantly, a representation of hope and relief to those in dire need.

Since my initial thought of this, my network of willing local vendors has grown to 14 retailers. Coincidentally enough, they are 14 of the top independent shops in Cincinnati, OH.  I am proud to be a part of the Cincinnati retail community, and the Shop for Haiti week will be a powerful omen as to how our community can shop locally AND give globally.

Be on the lookout for more info coming this week. Thank you for your support.

Great way to start off a day.

Yesterday (Sunday), as I got dressed, I heard a squirrel making a horrific noise. I’ve heard this noise once before, but I rushed to the bedroom window to see what and where the sound was coming from because it sounded like it was right outside my window!  I could not believe my eyes.  In the tree just outside my window, a branch to the left of the leaf built squirrels nest, were two huge common blackbirds attacking and tearing to pieces a brown squirrel. Did I mention this was horrific?  The blackbirds flew away, leaving the dangling carcass hanging like a child’s kite between a fork in the branch. All I could do was stare in amazement and disgust, and tears built up inside my eyes. Curiosity drew me outside to get a closer look, just to make sure my eyes were not being fooled. I wanted to throw up.

Ever since a squirrel ran into my open front door and up to screen window in my bedroom in college, I’ve always had a certain connection with squirrels and their sporadic, yet graceful approach to life. They are so simple minded and harmless.

Today, I looked out the window as I was heading downstairs and something caught my eye again. It was a lonesome squirrel, sulkily sitting on a nub of a branch, like a man in desperation contemplating suicide.  It was as if the squirrel had lost it’s better half in a devastating murder that he/she witness firsthand, and now had nobody to frantically chance around my yard or keep cozy with in the nest. How was he/she going to survive the rest of the winter alone…and the kids?  It truly was gut wrenching!

Now, I know I may be reading into this a little too much, but, there is no doubt in my mind that this was the squirrel that for the past year, I had been whimsically roam “my yard” with it’s buddy, who was just murdered.  I’ll probably get made fun of for this post, but I can’t help but see the emotion of loss, even in rodent’s.  This definitely is a shampoo effect of all of the horrific images of the Haitian earthquake I’ve been seeing lately on television, and not to mention the deer that I hit with my car last year about this time.

If this intrigues you as much as it did me, check out these two articles/blogs that I came across when I was trying to find out if this bird vs. squirrel scenario is something that occurs often:

Squirrels are not innocent either, check out this photo and bloghttp://tywkiwdbi.blogspot.com/2008/06/squirrel-eating-bird.html

Another study in England as read here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/earth/hi/earth_news/newsid_8448000/8448807.stm

Winters are difficult times for all species. I guess desperate times call for desperate measures. Thanks for reading!
